| Bird
and Squirrel by Jacqueline Dee Parker
His gaze pools with hope, Throat of a creek soaking moss, sipping
Remember we dyed my brother’s
feathers to trick the other girls Tonight rainwater brims on palm fronds
I heard they skinned his mother. smoky from pipes and candles She’d worn an apron with square
pockets Her silken fur’s a hearthrug. then stand at the stove til nightfall, his tears disposed to the pot What I felt when I flew by-- misery’s hunger, a hard nut
to crack. each day, an experiment in immortality, In mourning the creek ran away from him-- So long in the clouds I’ve
circled Now rainwater pounds palm fronds,
When through the peephole I finally
fly, as if my arrival were expected, We push a wide mop with wet loops and our shadows turn up the corners
the beam kindling our embrace bid to abide--ours is a marriage
of heirs
